In this series I’m depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on). With origins in the Middle Ages and Ancient Greek/Roman art, my still life paintings give me more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects. The combination of a solid technical grounding and a cosmopolitan lifestyle has allowed me to master a wide range of styles and media. Influenced by the rhythmic lines and the vivid palette of Matisse and Cézanne, my still life compositions are distinctive images which experiment with angles and perspectives to create an energetic interpretation of the traditional still life.
